"The Public"

Published on by Roger Karny

I just watched the above movie directed in 2017 by Emilio Estevez and starring him and Alec Baldwin... as well as a cast of well-casted "homeless folks".

The fictional movie tells of an "Occupy" of the Cincinnati public library by some 100 homeless men on a frigid winter night, all available shelters being occupied.  Estevez is the librarian caught in the middle, Baldwin is a police detective charged with clearing the building.  Baldwin has a son who is a homeless addict as well, and is in the building.

I think it's a great commentary on the current situation in our country.

Estevez is one of the sons of Martin Sheen, who has in recent years taken to doing socially relevant and even Catholic-leaning movie.  Both are great people and fine actors.  I'm pleased to see Emilio has done this movie.

Estevez' character reads from John Steinbeck's 1930's social commentary novel "The Grapes of Wrath" in a moving and very apropo scene.

I quote Bob Dylan:  "The times, they are a-changin'".  Yet somehow, the battles remain the same - just different places and characters.
